EXITVOID 101
What is Exitvoid?
A horror game from approximately a million years ago, which ran in yearly phases, each with a different setting. This meme is based off Beta, set aboard the Charon. It's an easy jamjar premise—you've been kidnapped from your own reality by COMPASS, a company with unambiguously villainous intent, with no foreseeable way home—so don't sweat the details if you weren't around for the original run.

What is the Charon?
The enormous, rusting cruiser the game was set aboard, which is constantly voyaging across an endless sea with no foreseeable destination. The only food available is canned, creamed corn.

What is a docking event?
The ship would regularly dock at different worlds based on various canons, often a mish-mash of all the entries in a franchise (e.g. Silent Hill's docking event was not based off any one game, instead borrowing from across the board).

Why didn't you include [this other event I really liked]?
It's a meme, wildcard it! Here is the old write-up tag. My personal recs are Pan's Labyrinth, Jurassic Park, and to come off the tails of It, Stephen King world.

Anything else?
Warn appropriately, and be respectful of people's permissions posts, comfort levels, etc. Also, please put "Hauntings Okay" in your subject line if you're fine with someone dropping in with a surprise! I probably won't for most threads, but :U you never know.

Is EV coming back? Why is this happening? Do I have to have played in the game to be here? Is this restricted to anybody?
No, this is just for fun! It's October and I'm feeling nostalgic. It's a meme, so do whatever you want with whoever you'd like. For the record, you don't have to know me to play, and feel free to share with friends. Happy Halloween!

THE SHIP: CHARON
CONTENT WARNING: The Food prompt contains body horror and insects.
The Void
Full Write-Up

The Charon begins its venture into the void, and nothing about it is meant to support life. Especially the air: breathing and traversing the acidic mist swirling inside the ship only causes a tingling irritation at first, then an itch, then peeling and coughing—soon, characters are left to deal with full-on chemical burns, with only a few syringes with cures and bandages between them.

Though for once, it seems like food and alcohol are plentiful.

FEAST OR FAMINE
Full Write-Ups: Drink and Food

I. In the void (see prompt above), alcohol is tainted—anyone who drinks it will have a drug in their system that increases aggression and paranoia. Rather than change their personalities outright, this drug exacerbates whatever violent tendencies they have, urging on their fears and insecurities to take out on those around them. For those trapped in the acid air, it's only a matter of time before someone snaps.

Non-alcoholic drinks will turn to blood as soon as they pass a character's lips.

II. Another day, it's the food that causes problems. After months of subsisting off only canned, creamed vegetables, characters will be invited to the Captain's feast. Of course, it comes with a hefty price tag; that squash salad you had? It must've been infested with something, because now there's something crawling under your skin—literally. Black wasps will find homes inside these feast-goers, buzzing all the while. Or maybe you had the poached prawns, and now your skin's turning transluscent, hair and nails going loose? The possibilities for side effects are as endless as the number of dishes.

Those that do not attend the feast will find that food turns to ash in their mouths.

THE HOLDS
Full Write-Up

The power grid is down, and characters must find replacement pieces in the dark cargo holds of the ship before it sinks. Every other person is equipped with a strange lantern. Be warned: when the internal battery dies, it will only remain lit in someone's hands, slowly leeching their strength.

And you'll need them, because dark snakes slither about the lower, waterlogged decks; these serpentine, skeletal creatures are invulnerable in the darkness and lightning quick, grabbing victims with their enormous claws. Captured prey is bathed in the snakes' bioluminescence, lulling them into a sense of warmth and security as their body heat and life force is drained out of them, leaving them frozen husks.

Hitting the snakes with a beam of light will force them to release their targets; this is also the only way to get any hits in, so don't go out there alone.

DOCKING EVENT: SILENT HILL
Full write-up here.
CONTENT WARNING: Silent Hill contains body horror, violence, gore, mentions of sexual and physical abuse, and generally graphic content. Everything below is tame, but be warned when exploring Wikis, etc.
FOG WORLD
The town of Silent Hill is filled with an oppressive fog, muting sight and sound, lending to a feeling of alienation and quiet. But that doesn't mean you're alone—lurking in the fog and dilapidated buildings are monsters of all shapes and sizes.

Compasses (the network device) will let out a static noise when any monsters are in the vicinity, but don't let it give away where you're hiding. Sometimes, it's wiser to run.

Here were some of our monster picks, though of course you can go wild with it. Make up your own if you want!

OTHERWORLD
Sometimes, a siren will blare in the distance, and the world around you will start to peel apart, like paint off rust, revealing a completely different dimension. This Otherworld is a parallel universe, specifically tailored to a character's fears and unabsolved sins—in short, a personalized hellscape. The area will still bear distinct similarities to the real world, but spaces that were safe before can be distorted beyond recognition, or filled with new dangers. Otherworlds can also force characters to confront their wants, desires, and regrets—Silent Hill unearths and materializes aspects of themselves they want to leave buried or refuse to acknowledge.

Characters can be sucked into and escape Otherworlds together, or exit one only to enter another. Choose your company carefully, though—those that feel no remorse or guilt over their pasts may just become monsters in the Otherworld themselves.

SILENT HILLS (2017)
While most of Silent Hill is falling apart with age, unkempt and uncared for, amidst it all is one strangely pristine home. But once characters enter this suburban refuge, they'll notice something's off—no matter what corner they turn, the space looks familiar, looping in on itself endlessly. The house grows more and more menacing with each repetition—the lights turn red. Photo frames are turned down on their faces, a flight of stairs appears with someone at the top. A figure lies beyond a window that can't be cracked, looking in. A pervasive feeling of being followed clings to everyone here—and what's that waiting at the end of the hall?

in true ev tradition, here's a plotting blurb: rather than trying to write top level prompts, i'm gonna write individualized prompts for anyone who wants to do stuff. please feel free to comment with prefs or pm me/hit me up at [plurk.com profile] scythed! and i'm game for any of the above 8)b the only thing i'm not interested in playing is flat-out killing him, but i've got no squicks or triggers.

ugh!!!! god I can't decide. if you have anything you're burning to do I'm flexible, otherwise write me some silent hill exploring we'll figure it out from there y/n/i just want to thread spooky shit

ETA. updated now that its been like two days and I'm slightly less useless re: starters- you got a few sh bites already and I've got a few going too so some more focused spitballing bc I'm here

now that I think of it, what about bioshock???? - (is the stupid glowing sword waterproof probably not.) tbh I want this like 80% so yusuke can embarrassingly critique sander cohen's creepy mask people art while things go to hell, my wants are simple.

i forgot how huge the rapture writeups were also, jfc

or misc charon stuff if you don't have any of that, the void/effect stuff is still a rly great prompt

I was going to add another one but nvm I'm tired, basically let me give you some variety

hi nerdlord i'm busy w/work rn but dives into plotting anyway, let's do bioshock, i didn't link it in here bc i wanted to hide my shame at how fucking long they are. it has SO MUCH to work with re:adam and eve stuff + i mean lbr art deco is relevant to both these characters, i'm not gonna lie and say i'm not shallow

also what if you could absorb plasmids into the transistor like you can absorb dudes in cloudbank.. i mean it's probably not good for him, but just an idea

Dw take your time, my life keeps exploding on me as soon as I get home, drags face

But yeah mean I wasn’t going to admit to the shallow bit first but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i won’t pretend I didn’t scroll past the write up last night and then wonder why the obvious event didnt occur to me sooner (because you buried your shame that’s why)

Anyway that sounds awful, I’m in. 👍 Isn’t all the Adam being recycled out of dead splicers and shit anyway, that’s like basically the same thing, probably

[ Even in their usual line-up back home, Yusuke isn't exactly known for his magical stamina—he's a brawler, used to charging in early and dealing punches, taking them where he has to. But Goemon has gone so quiet here, answering with barely a whisper when he calls, and he's had to make due with the powers granted them in this watery metropolis instead. Ones that come with a hefty price tag. After so many days here (presumably—how anyone here didn't go mad sooner from being an ocean's depth away from the sun is a mystery to him), all of them are run ragged, twitchy and learning firsthand how ADAM brought a once-grand city to its knees.

But with the train busted and their only ticket out of this place resting on that poor heap of mangled steel, he'll do what he needs to. The latest splicer attacking them is left in an icy cocoon, frozen in place as Yusuke breathes out, clenching his hand back into a fist as the plasmid's aftershocks travel down his veins. ]

...I don't know that I can manage another.

[ A warning, because his companion doesn't look to be in much better shape. If anything, he might be worse off. He still doesn't really know what Boxer is; at first, he thought that maybe his strange make and model might be an advantage here, but he's beginning to wonder if it isn't a liability instead. Hard to say. In either case, they should regroup and figure out a gameplan while the atrium is still filled with an eerie silence. He doesn't expect it to hold for very long. ]

[They get scraps of context from news clippings, audio diaries, recorded announcements. The city is a corpse. Infested and rotting. A lost cause for sure. All they can hope to do is get what they need and get out in one piece and hope COMPASS can't follow. Knowing what happened here and why probably won't help them skip town any faster. But he lines up the pieces anyway, while they scrounge the wreckage for spare parts for the train. Ryan, Fontaine, Atlas.

(Rapture is not Cloudbank, even at its worst. The dog-eat-dog face of it is as alien as the ocean floor outside the windows. But there's something familiar enough about the cloth it's cut from to ring a tinny dissonance in his nerves. The familiar shapes in the architecture, the glow of colored light on the water. ...The self important posturing of the voices on the airwaves. Like...if instead of falling further into fits of fickle uniformity, Cloudbank had been stirred up into a frenzy and torn itself apart before the Process could ever have the pleasure.

Maybe it hadn't been all that different at all, once. Some things you just don't want to think about.)

Strange make-and-model or not, none seem to be immune to the muzzle the city's put on them. For the first few hours the Transistor is little more than an anchor propped against a shoulder. All functions burned out, an odd muffled feeling, like he's half a step farther away from the world than he should be. Until he takes the leap and salvages the garbled tracelike data from the fresh corpse of a splicer. Seems to do the trick, at least at first. Not only does it manifest a new function to replace the ones that had burned out when they got too deep underwater—hackjobbed in and crackling like electricity in his veins and in his hands, like he'd taken the ADAM or the plasmid from the body himself—the Transistor seems to process the place a little better, for it. Picks out entrances, exits, security cameras and armed turrets. Hovering at the edges of his attention. Long as he keeps gas in the tank, so to speak.

After a while, the quiet feeling of vague familiarity becomes one of alien, unsettling nostalgia. He navigates the tubes and the tunnels with more confidence than he should, but he feels less himself for it. It starts with a feeling like buzzing in his ears. Like someone talking in another room, just low enough that you can't make it out. And the more they have to lean on the EVE to stay afloat, the louder it seems to get. Pushing against him like a headache, staticy and wrong.

So, a trip that had begun with his usual brand of amiable chatter while they walk has only gotten quieter, longer they spend down here. (He turns the names over in his head while they walk. Ryan, Fontaine, Atlas. All of it echoing, now, with flashes of familiarity, or fear. Then resentment, then heated hate.) He has to blink hard past the ghostly shapes of well dressed and long-dead patrons walking past toward the stairwell and gossiping. One of them whispers something about the access code to a door in the cellar of the bar. Yusuke interrupts her by freezing solid the very-present and very-real splicer Boxer had overlooked before it can swing a lead pipe at his head.

Hell of a wakeup call. After the warning, he looks—really looks—at Yusuke for what is probably the first time in far too long. Poor kid. Sooner they're shut of this place, the better.
]

Okay... Okay. [He seems to shake himself. Then, steadier—] Got it, thanks. You did good.

[He takes a breath and casts around the atrium for his bearings. Two levels. Gallery on this end, record shop on that one—]

Looks like there's a lounge over there. Might have something to get you back on your feet.

[Probably goes for both of them. He'll be okay, if he has to be...but his head is clearer, he's sure, when he's not running on empty.]

( Why is there no Planet of the Apes prompt. I'm disappointed.

Anyhow, I'm really interested in the Silent Hill prompts. Do we wanna have them established in the game setting or have them just show up? I haven't played the games, so I was wondering if there were any locations in any of the games you'd wanna try out... Ryuji would be so protective of Yusuke!!! )

i'm happy to wing it later when i have time, just lemme know if you have a pref! )

( I can write the starter actually! I just wanted to know what we should do because I honestly haven't played any Silent Hill all the way through because I get too stressed out playing horror games. I'm pathetic.

But I like the hospital idea... Ryuji can run around in a bloody night gown.

I MIGHT HIT YOU UP ON DISCORD FOR DETAILS BC I DON'T WANT TO MESS UP! )

[ After a huge, rolling fog divides them, the near-constant static off their radios drives all the Thieves off into their own, little groups, isolated from one another by however many haunted buildings and lurking monsters.

And in this time of crisis—Akechi isn't exactly who he wants at his back. But they have enough enemies without adding more to the pot. Yusuke looks at his compass, the radio finally seeming to have calmed down enough now that they've made it inside the sanatorium. Nothing about the place exactly reads safe, though. The walls are a dull, mossy green, flaking with old paint and new rust, the lights flickering at their last wicks or dead altogether. The air tastes old.

Yusuke surveys the space carefully, though his impassive look doesn't quite match how tensely set his shoulders are. Nothing about this place reads right, and from the lobby there's already a fork that they could be separated between. He wasn't expecting to say this much, but, ]

We might be able to find something here, but try not to leave my sight. [ It's dark, and wasting time losing each other might get them killed. ] I trust you can put your detective skills to good use.

[ To find answers to what this place is, supplies, whatever. Akechi is the perceptive sort, maybe they can peel back a layer to the real nature of this town with the right amount of digging. ]
foist: (CASE # 0 2 4)

[personal profile] foist 2017-10-24 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ if this were the metaverse, akechi could have just left and be fine on his own. unfortunately for him, the town is unknown territory and there's a safety in numbers that makes sticking together a better choice. even when that number dwindles down to two. although frankly, 'safety' is turning out to be nonexistent in this place.

which is why there's very little reassurance to be found in the lack of static that denotes a lesser presence of monsters once he and yusuke find themselves driven into the sanatorium. the atmosphere itself seems threatening, made all the more unsettling by the decaying appearance of the building. this place seems like bad news. but what choice do they have?

he resists the urge to bristle when yusuke practically commands him. instead he nods calmly, pleasant smile put in place as always in spite of how on edge he actually is. ]

Yes, of course.

[ if it's a little strained and lackluster, it can be blamed on current circumstances. true to his word, he doesn't stray far when he moves to inspect the counter on the side of the lobby, speaking (almost) casually as he goes. ]

Doesn't it remind you of mementos?

[ something about the rot clinging to everything and how abandoned it all looks calls to mind subway tracks in a similar state. it's just that the monsters are a lot more horrifying here. ]
